N.C. deputy shot and wounded; suspect killed

JONESVILLE, N.C. -- A western North Carolina man has died after exchanging gunfire with law officers during a standoff that also wounded a Wilkes County sheriff's deputy.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that 60-year-old James M. Barrett, of Jonesville, exchanged shots with deputies responding to a domestic dispute involving Barrett on Monday morning in Ronda, about 75 miles north of Charlotte. Authorities say Barrett was shot, then fled into nearby woods before being caught. He later died. No other details about Barrett's death have been released.

CBS affiliate WBTV identified the deputy as Sgt. Steven Russell. He was reportedly shot through the windshield of his car in his shoulder and grazed on his head. He was in good condition Monday, reports the station.

One other person was also been taken to a hospital for gunshot wounds.

Authorities also believe Barrett set a house on fire before fleeing.
