Newt Gingrich: If I'm the VP nominee...

Newt Gingrich on Trump "veepstakes"

During a Facebook Live chat Tuesday afternoon, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich didn't acknowledge reports that Donald Trump had selected Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate.

"[W]hether I'm the person he announces or we have Mike Pence being announced--I'm going to do a Facebook Live," Gingrich said. "And I promise you if I'm the nominee, I'll be a nominee with Facebook Live, and you'll have lots of opportunities. And if Mike's the nominee, I'm going to try and get him to do a lot of Facebook Live because this is a great way for us to be able to talk to each other."

A GOP source close to the vice presidential selection process told CBS News' Major Garrett early Thursday afternoon that Trump had settled on Pence as his vice president. A couple of hours later, Gingrich announced the start of his Facebook live event in a tweet:

And in a radio interview that aired Thursday, Trump told host Michael Savage that he hadn't yet settled on a running mate.

"No, I haven't made that decision yet," he said. "I'll make it today probably or maybe tomorrow. But I'm going to announce it tomorrow at eleven, Michael. And you'll be one of the people--maybe you'll be there even--but I'll be announcing it in New York City tomorrow at about eleven o'clock."

Trump gathered his top vice presidential picks in Indiana--leading to speculation that the presumptive Republican nominee would choose the state's governor, Mike Pence, over Newt Gingrich--a Pennsylvanian--and Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama.

At his residence Thursday morning in McLean, Virginia, Gingrich dodged reporters' questions about whether he would be Trump's running mate, saying, "I don't answer questions at my house." And in a bizarre moment after Gingrich had already departed his Virginian residence Thursday morning, one of his neighbors initiated a hostile exchange with an African American network cameraman--mocking the "Black Lives Matter" movement and making unprompted comments like, "Why are you looking at me like that? "Are you going to shoot me?" and "Where's your gun?"

Gingrich, in an email discussion earlier this week with CBS News' Major Garrett, had suggested that he might know who had been picked by 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. Thursday, but he said in his late afternoon Facebook discussion that he was "looking forward to the next 24 hours."

Donald Trump, Jr. joked on Twitter about the veep pick late Thursday afternoon.

Major Garrett contributed to this report.
