NYC girl falls 3 stories down elevator shaft

NEW YORK -- A girl was hospitalized in serious condition after she fell several flights down an elevator shaft in a Manhattan building Friday afternoon, CBS New York reports.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the girl fell three flights from the first floor to the sub-basement in the building in New York's SoHo neighborhood, according to FDNY Battalion Chief Phil Solimeo.

The girl lives on the top floor of the five-story building, Solimeo said, adding that she fell 30 to 35 feet.

Fire crews rushed to the base of the elevator shaft and placed her on a backboard before rushing to Bellevue Hospital in an ambulance, Solimeo said. She had multiple injuries.

Solimeo said the girl was an adolescent but could not specify her age.

The city Department of Buildings elevator unit was on the scene investigating late Friday afternoon.
