Muslim woman ejected from Trump rally in South Carolina
Police ejected a Muslim woman from a Donald Trump rally in South Carolina late Friday night, just as anti-Muslim sentiment in the GOP front-runner's campaign has reached a fever pitch.
During the rally, as Trump expounded on the dangers of welcoming Syrian refugees into the United States, saying that they "probably are ISIS," the woman -- wearing a white hijab and turquoise T-shirt reading "Salam, I come in peace" -- silently stood up in protest.
Rose Hamid -- a 56-year-old flight attendant, according to CNN -- did not say a word.
But moments later, she was escorted out of the venue by several police officers.
"The ugliness really came out fast, and that's really scary," Hamid told CNN in an interview after she was escorted out of the venue. Trump supporters, Hamid said, had shouted at her to "get out." One person reportedly yelled, "You have a bomb."
Hamid was standing with a group mounting a "silent protest" led by Jibril Hough, a spokesman for the Islamic Center of Charlotte.
The protesters in the audience had star-shaped badges on, some reading "Muslim" and others reading "Stop Islamophobia." The man standing next to Hamid had a badge on that read "human." At least two others wearing badges were escorted out, though some were not silent.
Hough's group had also attended Trump's rally in Aiken, South Carolina, and were ejected for participating in a protest then.
Trump took a moment out of his speech to comment on the disruption, saying "There is hatred against us that is unbelievable... It's their hatred, it's not our hatred."
As a central tenet of his White House campaign, the top Republican presidential contender has pledged to eradicate the threat of radical terrorists by any means necessary.
Last year, the billionaire called for a "total and complete shutdown" of all Muslims from entering the United States, citing the threat of ISIS. He has also suggested closing down mosques and compiling a "Muslim database."
During the rally, other protesters interrupted Trump's speech at least four times. One person escorted out was holding aloft a "Trump Likes Nickelback" sign directly behind the GOP front-runner, referring to the oft-maligned Canadian rock band.
The campaign did not respond to a request for comment about the woman's ejection from the rally.
