Miss Washington, DUI: Beauty queen resigns after arrest comes to light

SEATTLE -- The woman crowned Miss Washington USA has resigned after it came to light that she pleaded guilty to drunken driving charges in September, reports CBS affiliate KIRO.

Stormy Keffeler failed to disclose the DUI when she entered the competition, according to contest organizers. Contestants are required to fill out extensive paperwork that includes questions related to criminal history.

Organizers became aware of the arrest several days ago through an anonymous email, they said.

According to the rules of the pageant, contestants promise they have not or will not engage in illegal activity.

"There was nothing disclosed on her paperwork," said Maureen Francisco, Miss Washington USA Pageant co-director. "You have to disclose everything -- if you have any nudity, if you've ever had a felony, you disclose every piece of information."

Francisco says Keffeler was remorseful.

Keffeler, who won the pageant in October, served two days in the Kirkland Jail in December to meet the requirements of her DUI guilty plea.

With Keffer now "unable" to fulfill her duties, runner-up Kelsey Schmidt is the new Miss Washington USA.
