Michael Santiago, dad whose 6-year-old shot, killed 3-year-old brother, due in court

CHICAGO - A Chicago father charged after his 3-year-old son was fatally shot by his 6-year-old brother is free on $75,000 bail and due back in court next month.

Michael Santiago, 25, appeared briefly in court on Friday. He is charged with felony child endangerment in the shooting Saturday night that killed his youngest son, Eian Santiago.

Police said the two boys were playing when the older boy reached on top of the refrigerator and grabbed the loaded handgun and then accidentally shot the younger boy in the face.

Prosecutors say Santiago was a former gang member and bought the gun in a street sale because he felt he needed it for protection.

Santiago's next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 9.
