Border patrol: Accordion is drug smuggler's chosen instrument

NOGALES, Ariz. - Surely a man who allegedly tried to smuggle four-and-a-half pounds of methamphetamine from Mexico into Arizona at least deserves an "A" for creativity.

Better make that an "A" for accordion.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers say 18-year-old Eloy Renteria-Ortiz was caught with nearly $13,600 worth of meth - wrapped in black tape - and hidden in the center of the accordion he was carrying.

The drugs and instrument were seized Monday at the Arizona Port of Nogales where Renteria-Ortiz was searched and turned over to Immigration and Customs' Homeland Security Investigations.

His hometown in Mexico wasn't released and it wasn't immediately clear Thursday if the suspect has a lawyer in his repertoire.
