Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks reunite in the "Ithaca" trailer

It's been nearly 20 years since "You've Got Mail" -- and 23 years since "Sleepless in Seattle" -- but fans holding out for a Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks reunion are in luck.

The romantic comedy duo are back together for Ryan's directorial debut, "Ithaca," based on William Saroyan's 1943 novel "The Human Comedy." But, as the first trailer shows, it's not going to be in keeping with their previous screen pairings.

The film tells the story of a 14-year-old telegraph messenger (Alex Neustaedter) in upstate New York whose older brother (Jack Quaid) is overseas fighting in World War II. Ryan and Hanks play their parents.

"Ithaca" hits theaters September 9, 2016.
