Manhunt for shooter of mom, 4 kids in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Birmingham police are investigating a shooting in which four children were shot and their mother was killed, reports the CBS affiliate here, WIAT-TV.

Lt. Sean Edwards tells local media the shooting occurred Wednesday evening at a North Birmingham house. Police confirmed that a woman in her mid-30s was killed.

She was shot in the back with a rifle, WIAT says.

All the children were rushed to a local hospital.

The children were 5, 8, 11 and 12, WIAT reports, adding that the 5-year-old was shot in the cheek, the 8 year old in the leg, the 11 year old in the hand and hip and the 12 year old in the chest. The 12 year old was reported to be in critical condition.

WIAT says there were at least 8 children in the house in all. Three are in the custody of local child protective authorities and one is with a family member.

Edwards says investigators believe the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic disturbance.

Police were searching for a suspect believed to be the woman's boyfriend.
