Man with assault rifle arrested at busy N.C. mall

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --A man armed with an assault rifle was detained Thursday evening at a busy North Carolina mall, police said.

Fayetteville Police said they responded to Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville after witnesses reported seeing a gunman in the Macy's store.

After they arrived on scene around 6:25 p.m., police located a man who was carrying an AR-15 rifle, a Kevlar vest and multiple rifle ammunition magazines.

Fayetteville Assistant Police Chief Anthony Kelly told CBS News affiliate WRAL the man did not threaten anyone and that the ammunition rounds were in a backpack.

"With the terror alerts that we've had, it's a holiday weekend, it's the nation's birthday, our senses are high," he said. "Thankfully it turned out like it did."

There were initial reports of a second suspect, but after a sweep of the mall, police determined the unidentified armed man was alone.

No shots were fired and no one was reported injured.
