Man struck on Indiana highway saved by state trooper

INDIANAPOLIS - A quick-thinking state trooper likely saved the life of a man bleeding heavily from one of his legs after he was struck by a car along a highway in Indianapolis.

State Police say 25-year-old Latin McKinney of Indianapolis was working to jump-start his stalled vehicle early Saturday along Interstate 465 when his sister saw a car heading toward them and shouted for him to move.

Police say McKinney tried to jump out of the way but was struck in the leg, which began bleeding heavily.

Trooper David Ploog rushed to the scene and applied a one-handed tourniquet to McKinney's injured leg and tightened it until the bleeding stopped.

Ploog says he knew immediately the bleeding "would have to be stopped or he could bleed to death rather quickly."
