Large wave sweeps couple into ocean; only 1 survives

PACIFICA, Calif. -- A 60-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon after he and a woman in Northern California were apparently swept into the ocean by a large wave, CBS San Francisco reports.

The San Mateo County Coroner's Office said Larry Moore was pronounced dead at 3:20 p.m., about five minutes after he was pulled from the ocean by a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer.

The Coast Guard responded to the incident around 2 p.m. and staged a water rescue near the Pacifica Pier after the couple was knocked into the water, according to Coast Guard Lt. Marcia Medina.

The woman was pulled to safety by an unknown party by the time rescuers arrived, but Moore appeared to be unconscious when he was pulled from the water.

The woman was taken to a hospital. Her condition has not yet been released.
