Man dead in police-involved shooting at New Jersey library

LYNDHURST, N.J. - One man is dead and two police officers are hospitalized with shock after a shooting at a New Jersey library on Friday, reports CBS New York.

Police said the fatal shooting occurred on the top floor of the Lyndhurst Public Library at around 1:30 p.m.

The officers reportedly opened fire following a confrontation with the suspect identified as Kevin Allen, 36.

Barb McGuire lives across the street from the library and told the station she tried to comfort a woman who frantically ran out of the library.

"She heard noise, she heard running around. She saw the cops, she heard pop pop pop," said McGuire. "She said the cops said 'everyone get out' and that was it."

Police are questioning several people in the town about ten miles from New York City, including a small child who witnessed the shooting, according to CBS New York.

The confrontation occurred in the middle of a typical library room with computer work stations and rows of books.

Lyndhurst Chief of Police James O'Connor did not release any details about what led to the shooting. The library was evacuated.
