Man cleaning up after crash that killed his dog is fatally struck

ROYALTON, N.Y. -- Authorities say a 53-year-old western New York man cleaning debris from an accident that killed his dog was also fatally struck by a vehicle.

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies say the dog had been hit by a car in the town of Royalton, north of Buffalo, just before dawn Monday.

The woman who hit the dog had reportedly already left the scene CBS affiliate WIVB reports. After this, the dog's owner Robert Strassel reportedly walked into the road to wash the dog's blood off of the pavement.

Deputies say the man moved the animal from the roadway and was trying to clear debris from the accident when when he was hit by another car.

Strassel was flown to Erie County Medical Center, where he later died.

WIVB reports that the driver of the car that killed Strassel was not hurt, but he and his vehicle did end up in a ditch.

The sheriff's office is investigating.
