Man charged with murder after dead body found on Iowa trail

CLIVE, Iowa - Police have arrested and charged and Iowa man in the death of a 21-year-old whose body was found over the weekend, reports CBS affiliate KCCI.

Steven Jonas, 49, of Clive, was taken into custody late Sunday evening and charged with first-degree murder. The arrest comes a day after the body of Zachary Paulsen was found lying against a fence on the property of a business owned by his family, according to the station.

Paulsen's body was discovered by volunteers cleaning the Greenbelt Trail - a popular biking path - on Saturday morning, KCCI reports. An autopsy will be performed Monday to determine exact cause of death.

It is unclear if Jonas and the victim knew one another. The suspect's arrest came as the result of a joint investigation by the Clive Police Department and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation. According to the station, Clive Police Chief Michael Venema said the incident was "very uncommon" for the town, which is 10 miles west of Des Moines.

"We train for this sort of thing, even though it doesn't happen often," Venema said Saturday.
