Man charged with killing D.C. corrections official

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A man has been charged with killing a District of Columbia corrections official.

Police said 29-year-old Dawit Seyoum, of Alexandria, killed 64-year-old Carolyn Cross, the deputy director of operations for the Department of Corrections. He is charged with first-degree murder.

Department spokeswoman Sylvia Lane says it is not yet clear if the killing was connected to her work but that is part of the investigation.

CBS DC reports authorities found the victim dead after they were called to her apartment complex around 8 a.m. Sunday. Police said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

Seyoum is expected in court Monday for arraignment. No attorney was listed in an online court record of the case.

This is the fourth homicide in Alexandria in 2014, according to officials.
