Man charged with capital murder in Texas store clerk's death

CORPUS CHRISTI -- A Texas man is in jail facing charges of capital murder in the death of a convenience store clerk, reports CBS affiliate KZTV.

Stripes clerk Ignacio Rodriguez, 50, was reportedly killed during a robbery early Sunday morning. Later that afternoon, police arrested a suspect, James Elizalde, at his Corpus Christi home, according to the station.

Officers had responded to the location after receiving an incomplete 911 call, the station reported. When police arrived, they found that the clerk had been shot.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later.

Police told reporters that at around 3 a.m. Sunday, three suspects walked up to the counter purportedly with some items to buy and allegedly robbed the clerk when he opened the register. After the clerk was shot, all three men ran out of the store, police said.

Police later released surveillance photos, according to the station.

Elizalde is now reportedly being held on a $1 million bond.

The two other men with him were reportedly found and then released. However, detectives have not ruled out pursuing charges against them, according to the station.
