Man charged with 3 murders in California rampage

PASADENA, Calif. - A man arrested after a weekend shooting rampage in Pasadena, California, has been charged with three counts of murder.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office said Tuesday that 44-year-old John Izeal Smith also faces three counts of attempted murder.

Smith is accused of killing 90-year-old Luis Fernando Aguiar inside a house and 59-year-old Maria Teresa Aguiar outside the dwelling on Saturday.

A neighbor, 31-year-old Jose Hernandez Iribe, was also fatally shot.

Two other people were grazed by bullets and shrapnel. One of the attempted-murder counts alleges an attempt to kill a police officer.

Investigators say Smith fired a total of 40 bullets.

He was arrested after a 90-minute standoff.

Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty if Smith is convicted.
