Man arrested in Utah bomb plot wanted anti-gov't uprising

TREMONTON, Utah - Authorities have arrested a 47-year-old Utah man they say wanted to kill police officers and blow up a police department with the hope it would cause an uprising against the government.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Utah said in a statement late Friday that FBI agents and police in Tremonton arrested John Huggins on Thursday.

FBI Special Agent Steven Cadiz says in court documents that Huggins built an improvised explosive device and possessed explosive materials and instructions for making bombs.

U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman Melodie Rydalch says Huggins appeared on a charge of possessing an unregistered destructive device Friday afternoon and will remain in custody until a hearing Tuesday.

If convicted, he could face 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
