"Getaway Granny": Cops say grandma was burglar's driver

HINGHAM, Mass. - Police in the Massachusetts shore town of Hingham say a 22-year-old man who broke into a home used his unwitting grandmother as his driver - to the house, and for the getaway.

According to CBS Boston , police were called to the house on February 14, after the homeowner saw an unfamiliar car in the driveway with a woman in the driver's seat. The homeowner then saw a man walk from the side of the house, get in the car and leave.

Upon further inspection, the resident found a window smashed and cash missing from his home.

Using video surveillance, CBS Boston reports, police tracked down the license plate of the car, registered to a 64-year-old Roxbury woman. When police questioned the woman, she told them her grandson had asked her to drive him to a friend's house in Hingham.

The grandson, who is identified as 22-year-old Gabriel Nieves, of Holbrook, Mass., was arrested and charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny from a building and malicious damage to property.

Police say the grandmother had no knowledge her grandson was breaking into the house and will not face charges.
