Maine police find bodies of 3 family members in 2 separate homes

BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine -- The bodies of three family members were discovered Saturday in two homes in a small Maine town, reports CBS affiliate WGME.

The victims were identified as 71-year-old Svend Jorgensen, his 75-year-old wife, Carol Jorgensen and their 40-year-old son, Eric Jorgensen, officials said Monday. They lived in separate homes not far from each other in Boothbay Harbor, a 2,000-person town about 60 miles from Portland, Maine.

Police first found the Jorgensen parents after conducting a well-being check around 3 p.m. on July 4. Police have released few details in connection with the deaths, but investigators do not believe anyone outside of the family was involved, reports WGME.

The Boston Globe reports that the Jorgensen family was well-known in Boothbay Harbor, where they lived much of their lives. Svend Jorgensen retired in 2014 as an engineer with General Dynamics and neighbors said Carol worked in the travel business, the paper reports. Eric Jorgensen taught social studies at Catherine McAuley High School, a private school in Portland.

Investigators are awaiting the results of autopsies on the family to determine the causes of death.
