Man exits moving ambulance, gets killed in hit-and-run

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. -- A patient exited the back of a moving ambulance and was then struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash on Long Island, police said.

It happened just before 7 p.m. Monday in Holstville as Frank Ligrnetta, 51, of Bay Shore was being transported from Stony Brook University Hospital to a hospital in Amityville, reports CBS New York.

As the ambulance headed south on Nicolls Road, police said Ligrnetta got out of the back of the vehicle and was struck by a dark-colored sedan which fled the scene.

Ligrnetta was pronounced dead at the scene.

The ambulance was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is ongoing.
