"Logan" photo reveals Stephen Merchant’s mutant character

The release of the first trailer for “Logan” on Thursay gave audiences a look at Hugh Jackman’s final turn as the X-Men’s cantankerous hero, Wolverine, but some of his co-stars weren’t so prominently displayed.

Chief among them was “Extras” star Stephen Merchant, who briefly appeared in the trailer -- though you’d be forgiven for not noticing, since he was cloaked and masked, under a wide-brimmed hat and goggles.

But thanks to the actor’s Instagram account and director James Mangold’s Twitter account, audiences have been given a closer look at Merchant’s mutant character, Caliban.

The pale, socially awkward character has been a part of the X-Men comics for nearly 35 years, first introduced as one of the underground-dwelling Morlocks. His mutant power is the ability to detect and track fellow mutants, so he could come in very handy in the world of “Logan,” where there are hardly any around -- at least according to the trailer.
