"Lego Movie" spinoff "Ninjago" release date revealed

The pieces are starting to come together on the new "Lego Movie" spinoff, "Ninjago."

On Tuesday, officials from Warner Bros. revealed that the Samurai-infused 3D action film will be coming to theaters on September 23, 2016. Deadline was the first publication to break the news about the release date.

"Ninjago" is designed to capitalize on the success of this year's "Lego Movie," which took in an impressive $460.8 million gross at the international box office against a $60 million budget.

The spinoff film will be helmed by Charlie Bean (TV's "TRON: Uprising"), making his feature-length directorial debut.

"Ninjago" isn't the only film based on the popular toys in the works -- "The Lego Movie 2" is coming to theaters on May 26, 2017.
