Kimberly Naquin, ex-teacher, pleads guilty to having sex with girl

GRETNA, La. -- Prosecutors in Louisiana say a former high school teacher has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to having a sexual relationship at her apartment with a girl she taught.

Twenty-seven-year-old Kimberly Naquin pleaded guilty Monday to carnal knowledge of a juvenile and prohibited sexual contact between a teacher and student.

A statement from the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office says Naquin was a teacher at Destrehan High School in St. Charles Parish when the relationship with the 16-year-old student began.

“I thought she was cool because she paid special attention to me,” the victim testified, according to CBS affiliate WWL-TV.

St. Charles authorities began investigating after the girl’s mother learned of the relationship. Kenner police took over after learning that the illegal activities took place in Naquin’s apartment.

The girl testified at trial that Naquin cried after sexual encounters, saying she’d go to jail and threatened to kill herself, the station reports.

During the sentencing hearing, Naquin apologized to the girl’s parents, saying she betrayed their trust. The girl’s father also spoke, saying, “School is supposed to be a safe place for children to mature and to learn, and this teacher has ruined that.”

Naquin received a suspended five-year prison sentence. She will have to register as a sex offender for 15 years.

Destrehan High was also the subject of controversy in 2014 when two other female teachers were accused of having sex with a 16-year-old boy.
