Katie Holmes to make directorial debut with "All We Had"

Katie Holmes is stepping behind the camera for her next project.

The "Dawson's Creek" alumna is set to direct and star in an adaptation of Annie Weatherwax's book "All We Had," producers said Thursday. This will mark Holmes' directorial debut.

Holmes, 35, will play the mother in the drama about a poverty-stricken woman and her daughter who find a home and comfort in small town America.

Jane Rosenthal will produce the film with Holmes and Berry Welsh, vice president of production and development at Tribeca Productions, Reuters reports. Josh Boone (who directed "The Fault in Our Stars") will pen the script.

"Katie has such a clear vision for the book's irreverent, original mother-daughter relationship," Rosenthal said in a statement. "Her passion for the material, along with Josh Boone's ability to tell stories grounded in the comedy and drama of everyday, will truly bring these characters to life."

The actress added, "I am very excited and honored to be collaborating with Jane and Josh on this project and look so forward to bringing Annie's incredible characters to the screen."

Holmes most recently appeared on-screen in the film adaptation of "The Giver."
