Kate Winslet says talking about pay gap is "vulgar"

Kate Winslet is not interested in talking about the pay gap between men and women in Hollywood. The prim and proper actress said she finds the conversation "vulgar."

"I'm having such a problem with these conversations," the Oscar winner told BBC Newsbeat. "I understand why they are coming up but maybe it's a British thing. I don't like talking about money; it's a bit vulgar isn't it?"

Though actresses likeSienna Miller (who is British), Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep have spoken out about the pay gap, Winslet said such conversations are not "very nice to have publicly at all."

"I'm quite surprised by these conversations to be honest, simply because it seems quite a strange thing to be discussing out in the open like that," said the "Steve Jobs" star. "I am a very lucky woman and I'm quite happy with how things are ticking along."

She also added that she has never felt like a victim of sexism in her industry.

"I haven't ever felt that I've really had to stick up for myself just because I'm a woman," she said.

Winslet is not the only actor who said she does not want to get involved in the pay gap conversation; Jeremy Renner said it's "not [his] job" to fight for equal pay. On the other side of the equation, actors Bradley Cooper and Josh Hutcherson voiced their support for more transparency after Jennifer Lawrence penned an essay about how she made less than her male colleagues on "American Hustle."
