Old prison facility used in "The Blues Brothers" film catches fire in Chicago
The former Joliet Correctional Center caught fire Monday evening, CBS Chicago reports.
Details were not immediately available, but the Joliet Fire Department posted photographs and video of a rolling fire.
It burned for at least a couple of hours before the fire was "struck out" around 10 p.m.
Joliet Correctional Center on Collins Street is different from Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill. The old Joliet prison, closed since the early-2000s, has been used for film projects. Perhaps most famously, and long before its closure, it was seen at the beginning of "The Blues Brothers" in 1980 as Jake Elwood (John Belushi) walks out of the prison.
One eyewitness was driving by the prison Monday evening because someone with her wanted to see the film location. Then they saw the smoke and flames, according to CBS Chicago.
