John Dickerson weighs in on Donald Trump's combative inaugural address
WASHINGTON -- Inauguration speeches are usually about binding the wounds of the election and bringing the country together, but that’s not what Donald Trump chose to do for his address.
“This was straight out of Donald Trump’s campaign, where he loved the roar of the crowd in front of him,” said CBS News political director and “Face the Nation” moderator John Dickerson.
“There were signs that he was going to talk about unity, but usually with a unity speech, you offer something to the people who are nervous about you as a president, who didn’t vote for you,” Dickerson said.
“He offered unity, but only on his terms, and then he destabilized things further by attacking Republicans and Democrats, the politicians, by saying they are the ones who sold out those people in the audience.”
