Jimmy Fallon tweets reason for hospitalization after night out

Jimmy Fallon was rushed to the hospital on Thursday for a hand injury from a bad fall, and taping for the nightly program is canceled, the show's Twitter account said.

Friday night Fallon tweeted a photo of his hand bandaged up. In another tweet he explained what had happened. He also thanked everyone for the well wishes.

CBS News can confirm that "The Tonight Show" host had been dining at Scalinatella in New York City on Thursday, one of his favorite restaurants, where he was posing for photos with fans before the accident occurred.

"We don't know what happened, but Jimmy Fallon eats here often," restaurant worker Diego tells CBS News, verifying that it was not food or alcohol poisoning that sent him to the ER. "He doesn't drink so much. Usually just a glass or a half of a glass of wine and enjoys himself."

Reports say that Fallon took a bad fall and had to undergo emergency surgery on his hand, reported the New York Daily News.

The official Twitter account for "The Tonight Show" announced that Friday's taping was canceled and that ticket-holders should stand by for further details.

Before the accident, Fallon appeared to be living and hamming it up with fans at the restaurant, from the looks of fan photos posted on Instagram.

Get well soon, Jimmy -- you have thank you notes to write!

Their faces are touching and she's holding his hand 😩 I just want this #jimmyfallon
