James Comey confirms his Twitter account

Former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired by President Trump in May, outed his personal Twitter account in a tweet Monday morning.

"Goodbye Iowa. On the road home. Gotta get back to writing. Will try to tweet in useful ways," he wrote in the tweet. He paired the phrase with a photo of himself standing in the middle of a road. 

A Gizmodo report in March speculated that the account belongs to Comey, but his tweet Monday along with a follow-up from Lawfare editor-in-chief Benjamin Wittes, a friend of Comey's, confirmed that the account is his.

With the exception of his upcoming book to be published in spring 2018, Comey has mostly remained out of the public eye since his dismissal in May and his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee in June amid his former bureau's investigation into potential Trump campaign connections with Russia.

The account's first tweet occurred in March, featuring an Anchorman meme paired with a link to the FBI's job postings page.

The account's username "Reinhold Niebuhr" appears to be a reference to the theologist by the same name who was prominent from the early to mid 20th century for his work in political philosophy and Christianity, including his book "Moral Man and Immoral Society." One of Comey's tweets references Niebuhr's "Serenity Prayer," which asks God to grant the "grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed."
