Ivanka Trump on her late-night walks with Jared Kushner

Ivanka Trump on her father, politics and adjusting to D.C.

She's one of the most closely watched women in Washington, but Ivanka Trump sometimes sneaks away from the public eye for discreet, late-night walks on the National Mall with her husband, Jared Kushner, she revealed on "CBS This Morning" Monday.

Moving to Washington, D.C., "has been an adjustment for our family," Ivanka Trump said. "But it's actually a really lovely place to live. The museums are incredible. There's space, which is nice. I think in New York you lack that."

Both she and Kushner have joined her father's administration as advisors. When asked by co-host Charlie Rose if she ever sees her husband, Ivanka replied, "I don't see him as much, for sure. So we make the time we're together count. But late last night Jared and I went for a walk around the Mall. And it was so beautiful with the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. It was great. We had sneakers and baseball caps. And it was amazing.

"So we're trying to explore this new environment and new city, and really sort of interact with it and enjoy it."

"Mrs. Bush used to do that — she used to go out on the Washington Mall, [and] people didn't know," said co-host Norah O'Donnell. "So you can sneak away at some point?"

"Yeah," Ivanka replied, "and I've been doing a lot of it."

She also said she has a standing date with her 5-year-old daughter, Arabella, to visit Washington landmarks, including the Smithsonian museums and the Supreme Court.

"There's really a lot to do. I think there's a lot to do in New York as well. But I think when you've grown up in a place, you actually take it for granted a little bit more. So we've been having fun."

While the live TV interview was being held in the East Room of the White House, Jared Kushner popped his head into the room. Despite encouragement from his wife ("Jared, I walked into this room and within 30 seconds I was mic'd!"), and the hosts, he declined to sit down to join them.

But he did offer his opinion on the late-night walk on the Mall with Ivanka: "Beautiful. Great company. Beautiful scenery."
