Hammock accident kills Iowa girl, 13, just before graduation

DES MOINES, Iowa --A 13-year-old Iowa girl was killed in an accident involving a hammock just one week before her eighth-grade graduation, police say.

Peri Sagun's sister Eren told police she was in the hammock when Peri jumped in just before noon on Saturday. The hammock was attached on one end to a tree and on the other end to a 5-foot-tall pillar of bricks.

Peri's jump caused the bricks to collapse on top of her, her sister said.

The girl's father attempted CPR while waiting for first responders, but she later died after being taken to the hospital.

Des Moines police told CBS affiliate KCCI they do not suspect foul play, and believe the collapsed column was not securely in the ground.

Peri would have graduated from eighth grade next week. Her school plans to give a diploma to her family, and to honor her at the graduation ceremony
