Human head found in Long Island neighborhood

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Police are investigating what appears to be a human head found in a Long Island town where two severed arms were discovered about a week ago.

Hempstead police say the head was found at about 5 p.m. Thursday on Boylston Street, close to where the two arms were found dumped on residential lawns.

Area resident Jonathan Grier told CBS New York he first encountered a terrible smell while cutting his grass last Friday. He said he wasn't tempted to go track it down since the arms were found nearby.

A passerby reportedly helped make the discovery Thursday.

"I guess the stench stayed strong, and one of the people walking past, they happened to smell it," Grier said. "The guy across the street went over there. That's when they opened up the bag and seen that it's a head in the bag.

"This is crazy that people are running around dropping the body parts all around our area," Grier said.

Authorities are trying to determine if the body parts are linked to a partially dismembered body found July 8 in a municipal parking lot in Bay Shore, about 25 miles east of Hempstead. Those remains were found by two people who were walking to the Fire Island ferry terminal about a half-mile away.

Homicide detectives in Nassau and Suffolk counties are investigating as they await DNA results on the other body parts.

The New York Daily News reports that a police source says investigators are trying to determine whether the body parts belong to Chinelle Latoya Browne, a Brooklyn mother of four who was reported missing July 5.
