How did Stephen Colbert do as "Late Show" host? Social media weighs in
Stephen Colbert made his debut as "Late Show" host Tuesday night with a show that featured a mix of humor, Hollywood and politics.
Colbert's opening monologue gave him a chance to show off his flashy new set. He later had a chat with late-night rival Jimmy Fallon and there was even a surprise cameo from Jon Stewart. His first two interviews? Actor George Clooney and Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush.
"With this show I begin the search for the real Stephen Colbert," he said at the start of the episode. "I just hope I don't find him on Ashley Madison."
The premiere ended with a star-studded rendition of Sly & the Family Stone's "Everyday People," featuring "Late Show" bandleader Jon Batiste, along with Mavis Staples, Brittany Howard from Alabama Shakes, Ben Folds and Aloe Blacc.
So, how did he do? Celebrities and viewers weighed in on social media. Take a look at the reaction and then take our poll below!
@StephenAtHome Colbert had a brilliant opening night on The Late Show. Authentic, devastating, warm, hilarious. Oreos, JEB!, Everyday People

I'd rather watch Colbert sincerely interview political candidates than watch Fallon play duck duck goose with Clint Eastwood.

I feel like I'm supposed to know all these people performing this musical number on Colbert, but I only know who Pusha T is.

So it turns out Colbert didn't need the character even a little bit. He's going to do very... very well.

I really like Colbert's set, intro, logo, etc. I also love Colbert. This has been Reviews By Elliott.

Stephen #Colbert doesn't even need to make jokes. Just eat on camera and I will lose it.

I'm beginning to suspect that I just don't like Late Night talk shows.

That isn't specifically anti-Colbert, btw. I've just grown to hate the format. It's super-rigid & makes me itchy. Might be allergic.

Strange sentence to type: Colbert's years on Comedy Central are why he'll be far and away the best political interviewer on late night TV.

The new Colbert Late Show is sort of like methadone for the old Daily Show/Colbert Report. You feel better, but you don't get high.

Colbert not getting great reviews so far based on my timeline. Clooney was a poor choice to lead off.
