Houston police: Son shot dead while protecting mom

HOUSTON --Police say a man stole a woman's purse and shot her son in the head when he tried to intervene late Monday night, reports CBS affiliate KHOU.

The woman told police she was approached by the suspect as she and her son arrived at their Houston home around 11 p.m. The son, James Weldon Ecford, 26, had already gone inside when he heard his mom's cry for help.

The woman said Ecford came back outside, and struggled with the man who was trying to take his mother's purse. The struggle ended when the suspect allegedly shot Ecford in the head. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police say the suspect got away in a small four-door compact vehicle, along with three other suspects.

The mom was not physically hurt, but the suspects got away with her purse.

A detailed description of the gunman and the other suspects has not been released.
