Dozens of shots fired at officers in Houston motel standoff
HOUSTON -- A man fired dozens of shots at officers while holding a woman hostage at a Houston motel, reports CBS affiliate KHOU.
Police say the standoff began around 2 a.m. Thursday at the Baron Inn motel in northwest Houston. A woman reportedly called 911 and said she was being held against her will.
When police and SWAT teams arrived, the 39-year-old suspect began firing shots at them with an SKS rifle and a pistol, the station reports. He allegedly refused to come out of a motel room while holding the woman inside.
Negotiators were reportedly able to talk to the hostage and get her safely out of the room, leaving the suspect inside, KPHO reports. Police say he made suicidal comments and fired random shots from the room for more than two hours. One of the gunshots reportedly went through a common wall and grazed a person in the next room, who was treated at a hospital.
Police say around 5 a.m., after about three hours, SWAT teams used tear gas and moved in on the suspect, bringing the standoff to an end. They say the suspect continued to fire shots before he was taken into custody.
The suspect and the responding officers were uninjured. Police haven't released the suspect's identity. Police were questioning the woman held hostage and were expected to release more information later Thursday.
