Texas hospital standoff ends peacefully

TOMBALL, Texas -- A standoff at a Houston-area hospital ended late Saturday after a man who had barricaded himself inside his son's hospital room for several hours surrendered to authorities.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said the man was "distraught" over his adult son's medical condition in the critical care unit of the Tomball Regional Medical Center.

Harris County Sheriff's Lt. Joe Ambriz said a threatening situation arose around 7 p.m. Central Time, but wouldn't describe it or any details about the son's condition.

Authorities said around 11 p.m. that the man was in custody and the hospital was no longer under any lockdown. The man did not have a weapon.

Earlier in the evening, authorities had said the man was believed to be holding at least two hostages. A spokesperson for the Tomball Police Department had told CBS affiliate KHOU-TV the man entered the hospital with a gun.

Tomball Regional Medical Center is on a 150-acre campus about 30 miles northwest of Houston.
