HGTV “Flip or Flop” stars Tarek and Christina El Moussa call it quits

LOS ANGELES -- The husband and wife team behind HGTV’s “Flip or Flop” have announced their separation six months after police were called to their home over what the couple called an “unfortunate misunderstanding.”

Tarek and Christina El Moussa said in a statement that police were called out of “an abundance of caution.” They say there was no violence and no charges were filed. Police visited the couple’s Orange County home in May after receiving a “call of a possibly suicidal male with a gun,” according to TMZ.

The couple says the incident prompted them to seek counseling and they’ve decided to separate while evaluating the future of their marriage. The statement says they plan to continue their professional life together.

“Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage,” the pair’s statement read. “We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution. There was no violence and no charges were filed.”

“During the process, we are committed to our kids and being the best parents we can be. We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together.”

Tarek and Christina were married in 2009 and are parents to 6-year-old daughter Taylor and 1-year-old son Brayden.

HGTV says that it will honor any decision that works best for the couple and their children and that the home renovation series “will continue production as scheduled.”

TMZ first reported the couple’s separation Monday.
