Here's what an undercover probe of funeral homes found

Federal inspectors found more than a quarter of funeral homes in six states failed to disclose casket prices and other information to consumers, as required, according to a regulatory agency.

Investigators working undercover in half a dozen states last year found 27 of the 100 funeral homes visited did not give consumers an itemized general price list at the start of making arrangements, the Federal Trade Commission said in a news release.

The agency's Funeral Rule requires funeral homes give consumers a casket price list before showing them any coffins, along with detailing the costs of burial containers, vaults or any good or service.

The FTC inspections found price-list disclosure violations in five of 16 funeral homes in northwest Arkansas; seven of 11 funeral homes in Bakersfield, California; four of 13 funeral homes in Annapolis, Maryland; three of 16 funeral homes in St. Louis, Missouri; three of 29 in Westchester County, New York and five of 15 in Seattle, Washington.

All but two of the 27 homes agreed to enter a compliance training program run by the National Funeral Directors Associations rather than subject themselves to a possible civil penalty, the agency said.

The FTC has inspected more than 2,900 funeral homes since 1996, finding violations at 503.
