Helicopter crash near Baltimore airport snarls train service

BALTIMORE --A helicopter carrying three people crashed near the Baltimore airport Saturday,CBS Baltimore station WJZ reported.

Lt. Ariel Jackson with the Anne Arundel Fire Department said the helicopter went down around 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon near the Amtrak tracks by the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

He said three people in the helicopter were evacuated and are currently being evaluated for injuries. They were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not expected to be life-threatening.

The helicopter, a Bell 206 Jet Ranger, was completely destroyed. It was operated by a private contractor inspecting power lines in the area, according to the FAA.

The crash sparked a large brush fire that was brought under control by late Saturday afternoon.

BWI said the incident did not affect airline operations.

But Amtrak spokeswoman Chelsea Kopta said in an email that all train service between Baltimore and Washington was stopped due to the crash. It later resumed with delays.

The NTSB and FAA will investigate.
