Green Day guitarist Jason White has tonsil cancer

Green Day guitarist Jason White has cancer, the group says.

A statement on Green Day's website explained, "We have some news to report regarding our brother Jason White, and wanted you to hear it from us before word spread. Jason recently underwent a routine tonsillectomy, and his doctors discovered a treatable form of tonsil cancer. Thankfully they caught it early and he should make a full and speedy recovery."

White, 41, became an official Green Day member in 2012 after spending 13 years as the band's session and touring guitarist. He joined members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool.

Green Day's last studio albums -- a trio of releases -- came out in 2012.

The punk-rock group is among the nominees for next year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
