"Great wall," Made in Mexico? - CBS News Brief, Jan. 26, 2017

Border wall

One of President Trump’s signature campaign promises is one step closer to reality. He’s signed an executive order directing the Homeland Security department to allocate funds for a wall along the Mexican border. He also wants the department to complete a comprehensive security study within 180 days. We hear from critics who argue the wall simply won’t be effective.

Made in Mexico?

Economists worry that President Trump’s plan to build a “great, great wall” along America’s southern border with Mexico will dent economic growth in both countries. But for at least one company -- Mexican cement giant Cemex -- the massive construction project could be a boon.

Meeting Assad

Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard is defending her meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, which took place during an unannounced, week-long trip to the Middle East. See how Gabbard has put herself squarely in the middle of a huge challenge for those crafting and debating U.S. foreign policy in the region.

Doomsday Clock

A panel of scientists and scholars will announce today whether they believe we’re any closer to the end of the world. The Doomsday Clock currently sits at 11:57. The 12 o’clock hour represents the destruction of human civilization. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists magazine first set the clock 70 years ago, and it’s been adjusted 21 times since.

25th Amendment

Some detractors have suggested President Trump might suffer some kind of mental ailment. No sitting U.S. president has ever been removed mid-term, but Will Rahn notes the Constitution does provide a manual for how to force a president to surrender powers should they be ruled unable to fulfill their duties.

“Huge fire hazard”

The iconic Palace of Westminster, the British Parliament, has drawn visitors and hosted the most important decisions in the U.K. for hundreds of years. It’s survived a massive fire and the German Blitz on London during World War II. Now, there’s a fight to prevent the impressive building from death by neglect.
