Grand jury indicts suspect in N.C. triple shooting

DURHAM, N.C. -- Craig Stephen Hicks, the man charged in the shooting deaths of three people at a Chapel Hill condominium complex less than a week ago, was indicted Monday on three counts of first-degree murder, reports CBS affiliate WRAL.

Hicks, 46, was also indicted on a charge of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

According to the station, Chapel Hill, North Carolina police say Hicks surrendered to investigators late Tuesday after he allegedly shot his neighbors - Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, and his wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21 - and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, over what police believe was an ongoing parking dispute.

However, local and federal investigators haven't ruled out other possible motives, including religious bias. All of the victims in the shooting were Muslim. Family members believe the killings were a hate crime.

Hicks, who on his Facebook page describes himself as a "gun-toting" atheist and Second Amendment rights advocate, often posted about organized religion, according to WRAL.

His wife, however, has said religious bias had nothing to do with the shooting and that her husband was frustrated by the limited parking at the condominium complex.
