"Gone Girl" author Gillian Flynn writing new twist on "Hamlet"

The author who penned the bestseller "Gone Girl" is set to tackle the Bard.

Gillian Flynn is joining a list of authors commissioned to write new twists on William Shakespeare's works. She'll pen a novel inspired by "Hamlet" for the series for Random House's Hogarth imprint.

"'Hamlet' has long been a fascination of mine: murder, betrayal, revenge, deceit, madness -- all my favorite things," Flynn said in a statement. "Add to that some of Shakespeare's most intriguing, curious characters -- from the titular brooding prince to rueful Ophelia -- and what (slightly cheeky) writer wouldn't be tempted to reimagine it?"

The series is launching in 2016, to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

Other writers who have signed on for the project include Margaret Atwood ("The Tempest"), Tracy Chevalier ("Othello"), Howard Jacobson ("The Merchant of Venice"), Jo Nesbo ("Macbeth"), Anne Tyler ("The Taming of the Shrew") and Jeanette Winterson ("The Winter's Tale").

The film adaptation of Flynn's "Gone Girl," starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, arrives in theaters this fall.
