Girl dies in sand cave collapse on Oregon coast

Rescuers try to dig girl out of Oregon sand cave

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. -- A 9-year-old girl died Friday after a sand cave collapsed on the Oregon coast, trapping her beneath the sand, CBS Portland affiliate KOIN-TV reports.

Lincoln City police and North Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews responded to the scene around 5:15 p.m. after receiving a call about the collapse and girl.

Rescuers found a large group of people attempting to dig the girl out. Officers assisted in pulling the girl out from the large hole.

"The child came out of the hole unconscious and not breathing," Lincoln City Police Lt. Jerry Palmer said.

Officers began CPR and were relieved by medical teams.

An ambulance transported the girl to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital, where she was unable to be revived.

Authorities said the 9-year-old was visiting the Oregon coast city with her family, who was at the scene when the collapse occurred.

The girl's name has not been released.
