George W. Bush gets partial knee replacement

Former President George W. Bush traveled to Chicago over the Memorial Day weekend to undergo a partial knee replacement, Mr. Bush's spokesman Freddy Ford confirmed to CBS News.

The outpatient procedure was successful, and Mr. Bush was able to walk up and down a flight of stairs just a couple hours after the surgery, Ford said. The procedure was reportedly conducted by Rush University Medical Center's Midwest Orthopaedics.

Mr. Bush returned to Dallas, Texas on Monday and is recovering quickly at home.

The former president has prided himself on his fitness and in recent years has participated in aggressive mountain biking events. During his presidency, Mr. Bush's physicians regularly said he was in excellent health. Last August, it was discovered Mr. Bush had a blocked artery, and he underwent a heart procedure.
