George Lucas, Carole King among 2015 Kennedy Center honorees

"Star Wars" filmmaker George Lucas and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Carole King are among the 2015 honorees announced by the Kennedy Center Honors on Wednesday.

Rock band The Eagles, actress and singer Rita Moreno, conductor Seiji Ozawa and actress and Broadway star Cicely Tyson will also be honored at the annual gala.

"When I look at this year's outstanding slate of Honorees, I am struck by a powerful common theme - artists as history-makers, artists who defy both convention and category," Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter said. "Each Honoree and their career-spanning achievements exemplify a rare quality of artistic bravery."

Barack Obama and the first lady will welcome the honorees to the White House prior to the Dec. 6 taping of the gala performance.

The 2015 Kennedy Center Honors will air Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.

More on the honorees:

Cicely Tyson: A journey home
