Gender-swapped "Splash" remake with Channing Tatum in the works

Next up for Channing Tatum? Exploring life under the sea.

The "Magic Mike" star is set to star in a remake of "Splash," the 1984 mermaid comedy starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah -- only in the new version, the genders will be reversed, meaning Tatum will be playing the mermaid, according to Deadline.

Disney is developing the remake, with Tatum's "22 Jump Street" co-star Jillian Bell in the role originated by Hanks while Tatum plays the part Hannah made famous -- a mermaid taken in by a hapless New York City singleton.

Ron Howard, who directed "Splash," will be producing alongside Brian Grazer and their Imagine Entertainment. Marja-Lewis Ryan has been hired to write the script, based off Bell's pitch.
