"Game of Thrones" showrunners confirm two more abbreviated seasons
With season 6 of "Game of Thrones" all done, fans have been wondering when confirmation would come about exactly how much of the show there is left. Well, the wait is over.
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have two more seasons left of the popular HBO fantasy series, they confirmed during an interview with Deadline -- but those two seasons won't be 10 episodes long like the others.
"It's two more seasons we're talking about," Benioff said. "From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70 to 75 hours, and that's what we'll end up with. Call it 73 for now."
Rumors had circulated previously that the producers originally wanted to tell the show's story over seven 10-episode seasons, but the network pushed for more. As a compromise, it seems, the final two seasons combined will be 13 episodes instead of 20.
"We're trying to tell one cohesive story with a beginning, middle and end," Benioff said. "We wanted it to be one giant story, without padding it out to add an extra 10 hours, or because people are still watching it. We wanted to do something where, if people watched it end to end, it would make sense as one continuous story. We're definitely heading into the end game now."
